We studied annual variation in reproductive activity and productivity of the Thick-billed Parrot (Rhynchopsitta pachyrhyncha) during a five year period (1997-2001), in five nesting areas at the Sierra Madre Occidental in Mexico. Two breeding areas continue to be the breeding strongholds for the species. We documented 491 nesting pairs and determined the outcome of 162 accessible nests. A nesting pair laid in average 2.7 eggs, and produced 1.6 fledlings per egg-laying pair.
All but 1 of the 5 Mexican Gray Wolves released in Sonora in October of 2011 have been poisoned to death by warfarin, which is commonly used by ranchers and others to kill mammals. The wolves were found dead in Nov. and Dec. of 2011. Although uncertain, there is a good likelyhood that this is a targeted killing of the wolves. It takes high levels of warfarin to kill large mammals.
One of the wolves is alive and doing well. Mexican officials have said they will continue with the program although no details on further releases have been given.
This horrible photo of the killing of mountain lions in the name of protecting livestock is a reminder of the gruesome nature of the business.
Macho B, Arizona's only known long-term resident Jaguar in decades, was killed by Arizona Game and Fish after being captured and radio collared. After Game and Fish realized that something was wrong, Macho B was recaptured and euthanized. After an initial attempt to claim that the capture had nothing to do with Macho B's sudden bad health, it became clear that the stress of capture along with strong tranquilizers caused his subsequent death. Some believe that the euthanasia may not even have been necessary.

The long-time Arizona resident jaguar nick-named Macho B in a leg snare. Notice the swollen foot, disturbed soil, and obliterated tree trunk. Macho B was in this snare for numerous hours fighting for his life.
