Spruce-fir

In our region this community is represented only by a small patch in the highest elevations of the Pinaleño Mountains in southeastern Arizona, its southernmost location in North America. Here it occurs generally above 2800 meters(1) and is represented by the dominate tree species Engelmann spruce and subalpine or "corkbar" fir. This vegetation community is in danger in the Pinaleño Mountains due to climate change/drought and fire regime changes in the last century.
