Herpetofauna of the Mesa Tres Ríos Area in the Northern Sierra Madre Occidental of Sonora, Mexico

The Sierra Madre Occidental (SMO) extends from northeastern Sonora and northwestern Chihuahua south through western Mexico to the Transverse Volcanic Axis in the state of Guanajuato, which forms a montane bridge to the Sierra Madre del Sur to the south and the Sierra Madre Oriental to the east. All of these mountain ranges are volcanic in origin and are part of the American Cordillera that shapes the western backbone of North, Central, and South America, and Antarctica (Dickinson 2004).

Distribution of Phrynosoma ditmarsi Stejneger, 1906, with notes on habitat and morphology

The Rock Horned Lizard (Camaleón de Piedra, in Spanish), Phrynosoma ditmarsi, is a poorly known Mexican endemic species with a distribution restricted to the state of Sonora. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has categorized this species as Data Deficient (Frost et al., 2007), but using the Environmental Vulnerability measure (EVS) Wilson et al. (2013) assessed this species with a score of 16, placing it in the middle portion of the high vulnerability category; these authors regarded P.

A conservation checklist of the amphibians and reptiles of Sonora, Mexico, with updated species lists

Sonora has a rich natural diversity, including reptiles and amphibians. Sonora’s location on the United States-Mexico border creates some unique conservation challenges for its wildlife. We compiled a list of the amphibian and reptile species currently known for Sonora, summarized the conservation status of these species, and compared our list of species with known species lists for adjacent states. The herpetofauna of Sonora comprises 200 species of amphibians and reptiles (38 amphibians and 162 reptiles). Overall, Sonora shares the most species with Chihuahua, Sinaloa, and Arizona.

Horned Lizards (Phrynosoma) of Sonora, Mexico: Distribution and Ecology

Mexico is recognized globally as a mega-diversity country. The state of Sonora has very diverse fauna, fora, and vegetation. The diversity of horned lizards in the genus Phrynosoma (Phrynosomatidae) in the state of Sonora is a reflection of the landscape and biotic diversity. In this paper, we summarize the distribution and ecology of eight species of Phrynosoma in Sonora.
