Mixed Conifer

Mixed conifer forest grows only at the highest elevations and high north facing parts of the Madrean Sky islands and Sierra Madre Occidental, generally over 2150 meters. Species that define mixed conifer are Pseudotsuga menziesii (dug fir), Abies concolor (white fir), and Pinus strobiformis (southwestern white pine). In our most montane Sky Islands like the Pinaleños we also have Abies lasiocarpa (subalpine fir), Picea engelmannii (engelmann spruce).
