Bass and Double R Canyons, Galiuro Mountains
June 2011 hike in Bass and Double R Canyons in the Galiuro Mountains, which are protected by the Nature Conservancy and its Muleshoe Preserve. These riparian canyons were terribly degraded by cattle grazing, but are recovering. Both have perennial water and nice riparian gallery forest. There are native leopard frogs and fish.
Double R Canyon had been terribly overgrazed and became downcut over 20 feet in its lower stretch. If left alone it may slowly recover lost soil and seem to have some soil deposition already.
